interview with Gabe Sapolsky

i was fortunate enough to secure an interview with one of the best bookers in the wrestling buisness, Gabe Sapolsky. Gabe started in the original ECW, went on to co create Ring of Honor, and is now booking the critically acclaimed Dragon Gate USA and Evolve. he allowed me to pick his brain for a little while and this was the results.

how did you get involved with ecw?

----I was lucky and get in when ECW started in 1993 by writing Tod Gordon an actual letter asking if I could do a newsletter. I was fortunate enough to grow with the company from there.

what was it like working with eddie gilbert?

----I started right after he was gone.

who were some of the guys that helped you along early in your career?

----JT Smith immediately comes to mind. He is an all around great person. I don't know if I would have lasted in ECW without JT Smith helping me out.

did you have input on any of the angles in ecw, and if so what ones were your favorite?

----Not at all and nor would I have wanted any. There were so many great minds to learn from there.

what was your opinion of the raven/sandman crucifixion angle?

---I thought it was dramatic and effective, but I'm not coming from a religious point of views.

after ecw was sold to vince mcmahon, you and rob feinstein started ring of honor. what was the initial goal for the company?

---To supply a great DVD product.

roh, much like ecw, revolutionized the wrestling industry. did you realize that what you were doing was going to be as big as it was?

---Well, I don't think ROH ever came close to ECW's influence. We were just trying to present a good product for the fans.

how did you come up with the code of honor?

---I was looking for a way to say we are different since everyone was trying to be ECW at the time. The Code Of Honor made an immediate statement that ROH was doing something new and fresh.

for four years in a row you won the wrestling observer newsletter booker of the year, how did it feel to get the recognition for all your hard work?

---It was definitely nice and a compliment since so many people vote on it, but at the same time if I came along in the golden age of bookers like Heyman, Cornette, Watts, Graham and the list goes on and on I never would have even placed in the top 10.

what was your favorite roh angle?

---It's hard to say. They all mean a lot to me. They were like my children at the time.

your booking style has a definite japanese influence, who were some of the people you looked to as inspiration?

---I always enjoyed how All Japan booked in the early 90s.

you are now involved in evolve and dragon gate usa, and once again you are taking wrestling to the next level. how is it that you have been able to stay ahead of the curve when other bookers have fell off?

---Thank you for the compliment. I just always believe in re-inventing yourself and trying not to fall into routines.

are you ever satisfied or do you feel that you constantly have to top your own standards?

---I always strive to be better. It's what the fans deserve. You can never get comfortable.

some of the top wrestlers in the world right now have got their first big exposure working with you, who are you most proud of?

---Well, they all got where they are because of their talent. I'm proud of and happy for everyone that achieved success.

who are some wrestlers that you thought were not going to be big but ended up surprising you?

---I have to admit I passed on Ken Anderson for ROH.

if you could book one dream match with every wrestler involved in their prime what would it be?

---Eddie Gilbert vs. Jimmy Jacobs.

both dragon gate usa and evolve have been getting rave reviews from the wrestling community, are you surprised that both have caught on so fast?

---We are trying hard and working constantly so I'd like to think that hard work pays off. We are very happy from the support and response from the wrestling community.
